Flight Centre unites

We continue to open shops selling discount airfares in Australia. There is no consistency in shop names or branding.

The Bangkok Managers' Conference in 1987 is a turning point. After much discussion, we decide to adopt 'Flight Centre' as our common name, one brand and one best way for business systems. This is the birth of our red and white shop fit-outs, the Concorde logo, the Captain and our 'Lowest Airfares Guaranteed' slogan.

We start operations in New Zealand and start our own Ticket Centre. United as 'airfare specialists', our success takes off.

We hold our first ball in 1987 at Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast. Ours is a culture of celebrating success. We work hard and we party harder.

While we have been selling discount flights in Australia since 1982, we unite under the brand of 'Flight Centre' after the Bangkok Managers' Conference in 1987.

The Captain first appears in Flight Centre ads in September 1988. We aim to instil trust and confidence in the minds of customers – and people trust airline pilots.

Maroochydore Flight Centre opens in 1988 with the new standardised shop fit-out. There's an A-frame on the footpath advertising the top specials as well as an Airfares Board in the window.

We take control of our destiny and start our own ticketing operations in Australia. Here's the Ticket Centre office in Brisbane in 1992. We establish Ticket Centres in the UK and South Africa in 1995, New Zealand and Canada in 1996, the USA in 2008 and Singapore in 2013.

Our travel consultants see everyone as a potential customer. Here are the million dollar consultants in 1989.
